Frequently asked questions
Answers about POPA eligibility, applications, programme delivery, employment and digital enterprise.
What does POPA stand for?
POPA stands for Proof of Potential Academy.
Is POPA only a training programme?
No. POPA is a youth employment and enterprise platform. Learning is combined with employer participation, workplace experience, enterprise opportunities, transition support and outcome tracking.
Is POPA a UIF LAP programme?
No. POPA is an independent platform founded by Mafoko Global. UIF LAP may fund a specific POPA programme, just as SETAs, government institutions, corporates, foundations or other partners may support other programmes.
Who may register?
POPA is designed for unemployed South African youth, generally aged 18 to 35. Each intake will publish its exact eligibility requirements.
What qualification will I study?
Qualifications differ by programme. The official intake notice will name the qualification or learning pathway, NQF level where applicable, credits, duration and entry requirements.
How long is the programme?
The duration will be confirmed in each intake notice and will depend on the approved qualification and workplace requirements.
Is the programme free?
Any learner fees, funded costs and items not covered will be stated clearly in the official intake notice. Never pay an individual to secure a place.
Will I receive a stipend?
A stipend is not automatic. Where an intake includes a funded stipend, the amount, duration, attendance conditions and payment process will be confirmed in writing.
Where will training take place?
Only confirmed and approved delivery locations will be listed in the relevant intake notice. The accredited Woodmead centre is one current location, with provincial delivery sites planned.
Does completing POPA guarantee a job?
No. Employment depends on successful completion, performance, suitability, available vacancies and employer selection.
What is the digital enterprise pathway?
It is structured, independent and commission-based retail participation through an approved digital platform. Participants are not salaried employees and earnings depend on activity and successful transactions.
Will every enterprise participant receive a device or data?
No. Enablement support depends on funding, approval and asset-control requirements. Each intake will explain what is included.
How are commissions calculated?
The approved product and commission schedule will be explained during onboarding and may change under the applicable commercial terms. No minimum earnings are guaranteed.
May I choose my pathway?
You may state a preference, but final pathway decisions depend on performance, assessment, suitability and available opportunities.
What documents will I need?
Initial registration requires limited information. Shortlisted applicants may later be asked for identity, qualification and other verification documents through a secure process.
How will POPA contact me?
Only through the official email addresses, telephone numbers and channels published on the website. POPA will never ask for payment to secure selection.
Can employers, funders and delivery organisations participate?
Yes. Use the relevant partnership form to discuss workplace learning, vacancies, funding, venues, technology, assessment or impact measurement.
